Why does my HP Deskjet 3510 printer not recognize my new ink cartridge?
Let’s first help you understand why your HP printer is rejecting your new ink cartridge before moving on to possible solutions.
You are using a genuine HP ink cartridge that has been refilled:
Have you ever received a low ink warning from your printer while your cartridges are still full of ink? Sometimes, especially after refilling your ink cartridge, your printer will give you an incorrect estimate of the ink level.

When the above messages appear, it usually means that the internal electronics of the ink cartridge have been destroyed. How to Reset HP Deskjet 3510 Ink Cartridge
After you understand the reasons for the incompatibility of ink cartridges with your HP printer, there are two ways for your printer to recognize your new cartridge.
Method 1: Reset your printer completely.
Most ink cartridge issues can be resolved by resetting your printer. For example, if your printer constantly asks you to replace ink cartridges or tells you they’re empty, a full reset should solve the problem.
To reset your printer, follow the steps below:
Step 1: First turn on your printer if you haven’t already.
Step 2: Next, remove all cartridges from your printer.
Step 3: Wait for your printer to turn off and on silent. It usually takes 20-30 seconds to complete this task.
Step 4: With the printer still on, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Step 5: After waiting a minute reinstall the ink cartridge.
Step 6: Next, connect your printer’s power cable to the wall outlet and the printer itself.
Step 7: Again, please wait until your printer is quiet and idle before turning it on.
Check if it now recognizes your new ink cartridge. If not, try resetting your printer five times by following the procedures below:
- Next, remove the ink cartridge from your printer and turn it off again.
- Turn on your printer and leave it on for 20 seconds before turning it off. Then wait for your printer to turn off completely.
- Step 2 should be repeated five times.
- Reinstall your printer’s ink cartridge.
- Create a training page. This will ensure that your printer’s ink level system is reset.
After five resets, the previously installed HP cartridge identification information will be erased from your printer’s internal memory. The serial numbers of the last five cartridges that you have used are normally stored in HP printers. If that doesn’t work, you may be tricking your printer into thinking you inserted new ink cartridges using a refilled cartridge.
Method 2: Make Your HP Deskjet 3510 Printer “Cheat” to Work with a Refilled Cartridge
Clear tape is required for the following steps with refilled original HP cartridges:
Step 1: Remove the ink cartridges from your printer and set them aside.
Step 2: Locate Your Ink Cartridge’s Electrical Connectors and Bring Them Closer to You. Six columns of metal connections will appear.
Step 3: Locate the 7th metal contact in the second column from the left side of your cartridge (count from the bottom, the one closest to you).
Step 4: Place a Piece of Tape on the Seventh Metal Contact.
Step 5: Replacing your printer cartridge is a simple process.
Step 6: Make sure the printheads are properly aligned (the next section specifies the steps). Finally, when you are done, remove the ink cartridge one more time.
Step 7: Save the Tape, You Used to Cover the Seventh Metal Contact. Locate the sixth metal contact from the bottom in the second column from the right side of your cartridge.
Step 8: Place a Piece of Tape Again on the Sixth Metal Contact.
Step 9: Replace the ink cartridge and repeat the printer alignment process.
Step 10: Uninstall the ink cartridge and after the alignment is complete, remove the strips including any residue left on the metal contacts.
Step 11: In your printer, reinstall the cartridge.
Step 12: Do the Same Process with the Other Ink Cartridge.
